Governance is the collection of policies, roles, responsibilities, and processes established for an organization to guide, direct, and control how technologies are engaged to accomplish business goals. Practical governance anticipates the organization's objectives for both its business divisions and IT department.

Governance also provides control guidelines that make the implementation of applications and technologies both manageable for IT and also effective for the business. Governance can help protect your enterprise from security threats or compliance requirements. The implementation of a SharePoint governance plan can also help ensure top return on your investment in technologies by applying best practices standards in content management or information architecture.

Deploying SharePoint Server 2010 introduces new ways of collaborating, sharing information, and implementing business processes workflow in an organization. There are special considerations for governing SharePoint technologies that the organization may not have previously encountered.
