Frequently Asked Questions

What is this course about?

In this course, participants gain the skills to install, administer, secure and optimize SharePoint Server 2010. They learn to build effective Web application and site collection hierarchies, configure service applications for search indexing, profile import and metadata, and protect data with an effective backup and recovery strategy.

Who will benefit from this course?

Anyone responsible for installing or upgrading and managing a SharePoint 2010 environment, including database administrators, system administrators, Web masters and project managers.

What background do I need?

Knowledge at the level of Course 1501: SharePoint® 2010 Technologies: A Comprehensive Hands-On Introduction, or experience with a previous version of SharePoint, is assumed. Experience with a Windows Server environment is helpful.

What is SharePoint 2010?

SharePoint empowers users to build collaborative Web sites where they can share information without complex programming. SharePoint 2010 utilizes a variety of modern technologies (ASP.Net, Web Parts, Silverlight, and SQL Server 2008) to provide a rich user experience and complex data storage facilities.

What is the difference between SharePoint Server 2010 and SharePoint Foundation 2010?

SharePoint Server extends the capabilities of SharePoint Foundation 2010 to support more complex, enterprise-wide environments, adding needed services such as Federated Search, advanced document and records management, enhanced workflows and detailed Business Intelligence capabilities. This course covers the features of SharePoint Server 2010 in addition to SharePoint Foundation 2010.

Does this course cover SharePoint Designer?

No, this course focuses on administration. SharePoint Designer is a development tool and is covered in Course 1505: Building Applications and Workflows with SharePoint® Designer 2010: Hands-On.

How does this course differ from other Learning Tree SharePoint 2010 courses?

This course focuses on the system administration aspects of SharePoint 2010. Course 1510 is not a programming, graphic design or end user course, but shows how to maintain a secure, scalable and resilient SharePoint installation.

Course 1501: SharePoint® 2010 Technologies: A Comprehensive Hands-On Introduction, lays the foundation for Learning Tree's SharePoint 2010 curriculum and provides you with the skills to effectively create, manage and use SharePoint sites.

Course 1505: Building Applications and Workflows with SharePoint® Designer 2010: Hands-On, focuses on controlling the functionality of SharePoint sites by working with data and workflow and shows what IT professionals can accomplish with the tools and components available in SharePoint Designer.

Course 1500: SharePoint® 2010 New Features Overview, helps you identify and evaluate the key features of SharePoint 2010 for application in your organization.

Course 957: SharePoint® Governance: Best Practices for Managing SharePoint® Environments, focuses on the development of a comprehensive governance plan to maximize your organization's return on its SharePoint investment.

Course 919: SharePoint® for Project Management, helps you acquire the knowledge and skills to effectively manage projects with SharePoint by building a SharePoint Project Management Information System (PMIS).

I've taken Course 538: SharePoint® 2007 Technologies: A Comprehensive Hands-On Introduction. Is this course right for me?

If your company is migrating to SharePoint 2010 and you've already taken Course 538, we recommend that you take Course 1500: SharePoint® 2010 New Features Overview, or have equivalent knowledge before taking 1510.

I've taken Course 956: Administering Microsoft Office SharePoint® Server 2007: Hands-On. Is this course right for me?

Yes, while some of the concepts taught in this course are similar to those taught in Courses 954 and 956, SharePoint 2010 has many new features and enhanced administrator tools, so this course will still be beneficial if you're upgrading to SharePoint 2010.

Do I need to have experience working in Web development or with SharePoint Designer to be successful in this course?

No, you do not need to have experience working in Web development or with SharePoint Designer to succeed in this course.

Why do I need Windows Server 2008 or 2003 experience to take this course?

SharePoint Server 2010 uses resources from IIS and the Active Directory. Experience with Windows Server 2008 or 2003 is necessary to fully understand the technical concepts taught in the course, such as preparing the office network environment and replacing traditional file servers.

Do I need SQL Server 2008 or 2005 experience to take this course?

Experience with SQL Server is helpful because SQL Server databases are used to store the configuration and content information for SharePoint 2010 sites. This experience enables you to fully understand the technical concepts used in the course.

What kinds of hands-on exercises are in the course?

Throughout an in-depth case study, you gain extensive hands-on experience administering SharePoint 2010, accounting for 40 percent of class time. Exercises include:
